Storyboard

Evaluation of a music video
I was given a task which was to create a music video of my chosen song but the song that I can chose cannot have a music video already done for it by the artist. So I chose to do a music video of Bruno mars talking to the moon which did not have a video already done for it. What I have learnt about the music video genre whilst I was preparing my video is that every genre is important in its own way. what I mean by this is that each genre targets a different audience for example RNB would target young teenagers between the age of 13-27 the classic genre would target adult between the age of 40-60. Also for me to get more understanding of the music video genre I analysed some music videos for example I have analysed Rihanna ft. Drake what’s my name at the end of my analysing I came to a conclusion that it is more representing to teenagers and young adult between the age of 16-25. Why I came to a conclusion like this is because they have used high key lighting throughout the video which is conventional as it makes sense as bright key represent romanticism. If they were to use low key lighting it wouldn’t make sense because it would make the video dark and not appealing to the audience. Another example can be the colours used throughout the music video are conventional to the target audience as they have used bright colours.
I have created my idea for my music video by looking at conventions and analysing some similar music video which is the same genre the conventions I looked at most was the camera shots, colours and editing used through my video as I have noticed that these three where the most important as they all help to target the audience much more faster and an easier way. For my final decision to my music video I used all of the three conventions more than any other as it was more helpful and much easier to focus on than any other convention.
I also had to carry out some research about my artist, its previous audience and his other music videos. First of all the research I carried out about my artist is his biography what I mean about that is not his life is the record label he is signed to at the moment if he won any award ETC, secondly I carried out a research on it audience and how he targeted them in an easier way for example in his previous music videos such as Grenade and Marry you he used the camera shots, colours and editing more than any other convention.
When it came to planning my music video after the research I used a story board to plan my scenes as I just could not have done it using my imagination one time as I had to get the location and the camera shots correctly as it was difficult to. I had to re-record some scenes as the camera shot and the lighting was not ok and it looked like a mess.  I also had to plan where the character which was the artist had to be placed in what scene to get it to look right.
Overall I think my music video which I have created is at the standard as the actual artist video this is because I have followed mostly everything they have followed to create their own music video and it looks pretty much the same. As my ideas was similar to his idea if I had the opportunity to change my music video I would like to create some scenes with green screen as it would look much better and better quality as I think it would look more realistic as I had to use an image from Google for the moon and star as there was not any in the time being in the sky.

Planning the editing styles

Music Video: Talking To The Moon
Artist: Bruno Mars
Director: Ismail Saral

The editing style I have chosen is flash back this is because I think it is the best editing style that would suite my narrative will be flash back as my narrative is about two lovers who split up and the main artist has a flash back which he remembers good moments they had in between them selves.

The flash back will help to portray the message of love in different ways  as it would be easier to explain the narrative to the audience. Also it would be easier for the artist to build a relationship with the audience by using facial and body language expressions.

Also I would use slow pace editing as slow pace editing helps capture moments better and slower so the audience can view it in a better way to analyse his facial expressions This can build a relationship between the audiences because it will help them get in touch with the characters feelings and understand the emotions he is going through.

I would also use straight cut in my music video this is because as my artist is walking down the street he fade further down but the only way I can do that is by using straight cut This can build a relationship between the audiences because it will help them get in touch with the characters feelings and understand the emotion he is going through.

Towards the end of my music video, the video would fade to black this is just as he said " I Know your out there somewhere far away" As the music video comes to an end I use fade to black whilst he is walking down the parks pathway so the start of my story would be him walking through the path and it will end whilst he is walking through the path but the only difference is at the begging it is day and at the end it is dark.

Location and iconography

Music Video: Talking to the moon
Artist: Bruno Mars
Director: Ismail Saral

Using one location in a music video would quiet be dull and boring this is because no one would like to view the same background/location for at least 3 to 5 minutes. So that why I have decided to use more then 3 location as it would make my music video interesting and also the locations help the audience to see the facial expression and the use of his body language and also the location would help the audience to find to understand the narrative easier.

One of the locations would be Albany park as the artist is walking along the pathway I want this location he is in because I want to show the feelings that my character is feeling and at that moment in that time my character is feeling sad so by putting him to walk along the parks pathway alone shows that he is lonely and sad by his facial expression the location of the park might be able to build a relationship with my target audience as when you feel sad and lonely you would wonder around like you don't know what to do.

Another location I may use would be a hill because in the lyrics he uses " In hopes your on the other side talking to me to"  this show that the artist is hoping his loved one is on the other side so he may be climbing to find her. This locations can build a relationship between the audience and the artist this is because if I use this location the artist would show how he uses his body language and facial expression in a better standard which could help the audience understand what going on better.

Iconography is important in a music video because without it it can be quite boring this is because in my video I am going to use an I phone 4 so the artist can text her lover so we can see that he is trying to still communicate but if I don't use iconography in the music video their would of been no way they could try to communicate. Also using props in video ETC attract the audience more as it eye catching.

Costume

I have chosen white jeans so that the artist can show his vulnerability through the music video this is because if he wears dark colours people would see him as dull also white is a bright colour which is eye catching it would also allow the audience to get eye catch. I have chosen it as I think it would have a massive impact for the vulnerability of the character.

I have chosen this Red T-shirt so that the artist can wear it on top of the white jeans this is because red is the symbol of faster heartbeat and the colour of love. I think that this colour t-shirt is conventional as the song is a love song it would be good to wear, it would show the love that the artist have to the girl and it is also another eye catching piece of clothing.

I have chosen this white jacket because I thought that it would be a good match with the jeans and also it would show more of the vulnerability of the character and then the audience can understand much more easily what the music video is about. I think it is conventional because we would have vulnerable then love and vulnerable again which would make the audience understand what the video is going to be about before they watch or even listen to it.

I picked the black timberland shoe not because of the colour but because of the white strips that go around the bottom this is because it also represents vulnerability but I didn’t want to represent him to vulnerable. I think is conventional to the audience as they would spot the white strips and understand he is still vulnerable but also it would be a good match with the rest of the clothing.

I have picked the above clothings as i think it would be the best way to represent my characters also in the researched i carried out all colours represent that person in a different way for example the G-star T-shirt is in red but not in any red light red this is because i wanted the red to represent love but if i used a darker red it could of confused the audience as i could of represented blood this is what i am trying to explain you have to be careful of what colours you use as it can lead to misunderstanding to the audience. i chose the white jacket and white jean as it represent inisanty the T-shirt i chose that colour as i wanted to show the audience he is inistant aswell as love, and finally i chosen  the black timberland so i can show him as vulnerable. By carrying out primary and secondary research i have found out what colour would represtent what and how to use it in the best and effective way.
