I am going to analyse the 5 elements of a music video which is mise en scene includes lighting, iconography, setting, body language and costume.


The music video was set In three to four different locations one of the main locations were the house Chris brown and the little kid was at home this was one of the locations as the lyrics started “I wished I closed my eyes and I was home”. The other locations the character most appeared was the studio this was used so they can put in top lighting so they can create a glamorous look in the character and finally when one of the characters were under a low bridge walking and singing.
There was a lot of low key lighting used which is dark and small areas with light Low key light accentuates the contours of an object by throwing areas into shade while a fill light or reflector may illuminate the shadow areas to control contrast. This build a relationship with the audience because the audience understand more about his past as it talks about his past. Secondly high key lighting has been used this has been used so it can make the music video look more realistic this is used so that you can focus on the main character. And lastly there was top lighting used to create a glamorous look in to the character as when they was in the studio this was used so we know only in that point the two characters were the focus.


The costume the character used was mostly topless and with hoodies this makes them seem strong and so they can attract female throughout the video by showing of their six packs and tattoos. Their body language is more liked stress and strong. This represents them even more stronger as they are stressed this is convention to the music video as it allows the audience to understand what is going on with the character and what the video is about.


There was a basketball, car, weights and a guitar in most of the scene these were used this is because it can match the lyrics so the director of the video wanted to show them in there visuals this is conventional as it helps the audience to understand it much better rather than the visual.

Nelly - Gone ft. Kelly Rowland

The editing terminology and camera shot used in the music video of Nelly and Kelly- Gone was jump cut, slow pace editing and cross cutting, close up and also mid shot has also been used in the following video.


Jump cut was used right at the beginning of the video when it showed Nelly in one location and then it showed Kelly at a different location in the media/Film industry we call this jump cut for example we have shot of nelly walking along the beach then we have a shot of Kelly sun bathing along the pull side Jump cut is used to show us the performance and narrative of the music video. Jump cut gives the appearance of emphasizing editing it also help to draw attention of the audience to the constructed nature of the video.


Slow pace editing was used in many parts of the music video but small amounts here is an example where one of the main character which is Kelly is in the sea with her other two friends jus paddling as a wave approaches the camera moves in to a slow pace this is because the lyrics have a meaning and also the audience can see how they are having fun. The effect it has on the audience is eye catching because it is a scene which they will find interesting.

Finally for the editing terminology cross cutting has been used throughout the for example throughout whole music video but to be more specific when the camera face nelly and then Kelly but they are in a different they have done this so they can change the location without getting the audience confused the effect it has on the audience is positive because it make the video stand out more rather than it just being based on one particular location.


The most camera shots used in the following music video is close up and mid shot. Close up was used throughout the whole music video but it was more often use every time we had seen nelly and Kelly so  it is used so the audience can see the emotions and facial expression of there faces.  Mid shot was used throughout the whole music video but mostly when we have seen the main artist/characters this is used and help the audience understand the video in much more detail.


The editing styles and camera shot used in the following music video of nelly and Kelly built a relationship with their audience quickly they have done this by using mostly more effective editing terminology and camera shot. They have used jump cut, slow pace, cross cutting, fade ETC by doing this the audience will build a relationship with the artist much easier.


The camera shots and the editing style of the music video of nelly and Kelly gone builds a relationship with it target audience by using effective techniques for example using eye levels shot are really effective to build a relationship with your audience we know this because of media facts also the director and producer of the music video has used really good camera shot in all different kinds which allow the audience to feel there different emotions.  For example the emotion the artists have is happiness and love we know this because of the camera shots and the facial expression that they show to the audience. The camera shot have a massive role because without different camera shot we cannot identify the emotions.   

Camera Shots

Camera shot used in the music video I have analysed of Rihanna ‘Love the way you lie’ is extreme close up, close up, mid shot, long shot, extreme long shot and establishing shot each one of these shot are important to the audience as it make it more attracting to them.


Extreme close up was used 8 to 9 time in the video it was mostly when it showed Rihanna this build the emotions and show her facial expressions to the audience which is a good thing. Close up was used 13 times throughout the video mostly when Eminem was kissing with another character in the video this is also used to show us there emotions and facial expression. Mid shot was used 18 times in the video it was used when it wanted to show the narrative of the characters this helps the audience to understand the video in much more detail.


Long shot was used 9 times this is when the characters where having a relationship this helps the audience to understand the video and the narrative of it. Extreme long shot was used 4 times this was used to show the performance of the artist this helps to show the audience the location of the artist at that time of the scene. Finally for the camera shots establishing shot were used 5 times this was used to show the location of the video.


The camera movements used in the video is panning, tracking and zoom in these are used to make the video more interested rather than keeping the camera in one position. Panning was used 7 times and it was always used when Eminem was at the crop field panning was used to show the performance of the artist. Tracking was used 4 this was also used when the artist Eminem was at the crop field this was used to show us the artist and once again his performance this makes the video much more better because there is all different kind of movement which make it more energetic finally zoom in was used 2 when the character which had a relationship with Eminem crouching against the wall this particular movement was used to show the relationship between each other.


Camera angles used in the video where high angle, low angle, crane and eye levels these where used to take different kind of angles rather than one particular angle. High angle was used 3 times mostly when Eminem was at the crop field this makes him look smaller to the audience. Low angle was use 6 times mostly when the characters were on fire which was Eminem and another girl character this was used to show the significance of the narrative. Crane was used when Eminem was at the crop field it was used to show the audience his performance once again and final eye level was used 25 time throughout the video this help the artist to build a relationship with the audience.
Mid shot, close up, eye level, long shot and panning were used the most throughout the video this is to build a relationship with the audience as these shots are more important than the others also to show the performance of artist and narrative elements of the music video.

What Is A Music Video ?

I have analysed the music video of Rihanna- Man down the storyline (narrative) of this music video is when the artist Rihanna gets raped we know that she gets raped because after the first 30 seconds of the video the narrative starts to make sense so when she shots the man that raped her she has a flashback of the night that she got raped and how it happened so she decides to get revenge and kills him. The Genre of the music video is RNB we know this because of the beat of the song which follows throughout the video and also a man and women which helps us to show us the narrative.

The style and purpose of this music video of Rihanna man down is to entertain and build relationship with the audience we know that she is trying to build a relationship with the audience by using eye level shots which is more effective and more easier to build a relationship with the audience. The video also makes the song more understandable for some people that would of just listen to the lyrics this is because in the video we see a flash back whereas in the lyrics many people woudnlt be able to understand the song. A music video alos makes the song more popular much quicker as it is remembered as visual aswel, this is because of all the effective camera shots and editing techniques used. The first paragraph of lyrics said:

"I didn't mean to end his life I know it wasn't right I can't even sleep at night Can't get it off my mind I need to get out of sight Before I end up behind bars" before the music video was released of this song the audience would definatly not know what Rihanna is trying to means as she don't make it clear enough but with the video when we get the flashback of her getting raped with these lyrics we know what she is meaning with them words and it makes it easier for the audience to understand what is going on.

The relationship between the lyrics and the visual is violence, gun and the artist Rihanna shooting a gun all of the visual shown in the video went along with the lyrics and the song to show the narrative and the reactions of the artist. The relationship between the music and visual is that the camera and editing style of the video went along with the song. This allows the audience to understand the narrative of the song. There where also a lot of close ups used of the artist we see it generally when Rihanna is singing and we get a close up of her face. This helps to show the artist and her emotions of the narrative to the audience which was about rape.


There is reference when Rihanna was wearing tiny bit of clothing this help to promote the artist and allow the audience to buy into her lifestyle. There wasn’t any intersexual references use throughout the video. The videos performance is narrative and very small amount of narrative base this helps the narrative to be clear and show us the audience what it is about which is the artist Rihanna got raped and her wanting to get revenge by shooting the guy who raped her. We know this because as it shows flashbacks of the night she got raped.
