Planning the cinematography

Planning the cinematography
Varieties of camera shots are essential to a music video this is because Television is made up of pictures, called shots; each of the shots must be carefully planned. The long shot, medium shot, and close-up and many other camera shots such as the medium long shot and extreme close-up are the basis of editing in music video or movies on television.

Without these shots, the person who edits the music video, movies, TV show, or commercial would have nothing to work with. Editing, in nearly everything, camera shot editing is the combining of long shots, medium shots, and close-ups to create an effective visual presentation.
Close Up
I have chosen the following camera shot which is close up as it has a massive effect of targeting the audience and easily helps the artist build a relationship with them. Close up is also a good way of camera shot as it allows the artist to past the message that the music video is about to them and he can do this by the use of his emotions and past his message with the hot. The camera shot also help to show what the narrative of the music video and the song is by his facial expressions so without the shot close up it is hard for the audience to get the message. Camera shots are conventional to my music video genre as I would use the effective camera shot close up to show my audience my artist facial expressions and their feeling which this would help me to easily build a relationship between the artist and the audience.
Mid Shot
I have chosen mid shot so that I can show my audience how the artist is feeling and also build a relationship with the audience much easier as it is an advantage to have more than one shot that would help you build a relationship with your audience. Mid shot send a message to the audience every time when there is a different mid shot this is because mid shot allow us to understand there body language so they can quickly see how they are feeling by the way they act. The camera shot is also really effective to show us the narrative by their body language. The camera shot builds a relationship with the audience as the audience can quickly see and understand them. Mid shots are conventional to a music video genre as it has a massive effect of building a relationship with the audience and also be able to send the audience a message by their body language used.

Long shot

Long shot shows the entire body of a human figure and is usually intended to place it in some relation to its surroundings. I have also chosen this shot as it help to show the body language of the artist. A long shot does send a really powerful message for example I cannot use a long shot anywhere of the video it has to have a meaning to the lyrics and the visual has to have a meaning to the lyrics without these happening there is no need for a long shot as it would not have no meaning to the audience and would rather just confuse them.  But it we do the opposite then the long shot would have a powerful meaning as it would show the narrative of the music video.  The camera shot build a relationship with the audience only if the shot is used in the correct place if it is not then there is no relationship. This shot is conventional to a music video genre as the long shot help to show pass a message with the visual as well of the lyrics.

Extreme long shot

Extreme long shot show the entire body of the human figure and show more of the surrounding the long shot extreme long shot is usually used near the end of a music video which has powerful meaning. Extreme Long Shot send a message to the audience by the artist seeming vulnerable and the audience feeling sorry for him. The camera shot help build a relationship with the audience if the extreme long shot was actually necessary at that time and if it is it allows the audience to see the characters from the back and image how they are feeling. For Example

Extreme long shot is conventional to specific music video genre for example for slow and sad song it is defiantly not conventional to a music video genre which includes RAP/HIP-POP.

Audience Category

A
Top management, bankers, lawyers, doctors and other professionals, An audience who go under category A are normally the following people above which would listen to classic music as they are posh and stress over work as they have a massive responsibilities so therefore they would watch music channels as MTV classic.
B
Middle management, teachers, many 'creative Jobs ' e.g. graphic designers, An audience who go under the category B are people who have creative jobs such as a graphic designer. These people would normally be young as old people wouldn’t be creative enough to manage these jobs so therefore they would listen to Kiss TV as a music channel.
C1
Office supervisors, junior managers, nurses, specialist staff, are the audience who would go under the audience category C1. The following people are normally between the ages 40 to 50 this means they are not young and wouldn’t listen to young music artist so they would probably listen to songs like Whitney Houston ETC so they would like to watch music channels as VH1 as they target audience is people between their age.
C2
Skilled workers, tradespersons (White Collar), audience that go under the audience category C2 are similar to the audience in C1 so they would probably listen to the same music channels as C1 which is VH1.
D
Semi-skilled and unskilled manual workers (blue collar), the audience that go under the audience category D are people who have jobs that are less paid so they would watch music channels as VIVA as they play the music they would like.

“Do you think music videos should be censored?”

“Do you think music videos should be censored?”
I think that music videos should be censored this is because its sill using bad language and is unethical and can be harmful. Without censoring songs, you're allowing teenagers today to believe these words (swearing) in songs are cool and possibly better lived out in reality than without these songs. As the censorship has the right to stop a song or a video from being broadcasted on television and radio. For example I think it was right for Rihanna’s we found love music video to get banded as it was a bad influence to the audience but not any audience as Rihanna’s songs generally target audience between the age of 13-27 it wouldn’t be right for the audience between the ages of 13-17 to see it as it has smoking, drinking- pills, drugs, sex, positioning and crime.
A detailed example why music videos should be censored is Rihanna’s music video of we found love as the music video has met with mixed reviews from music critics as the video included stuff like smoking, drinking- pills, drugs, sex, positioning and crime.  The point of the music video is to allegedly show how love can be like a drug, and does so using images driven by sex and drugs as Rihanna goes through the motions with Chris Brown but she showed it in a wrong way as MTV didn’t except it. So the MTV music channel offered Rihanna to except the video but to show it after watershed as it wasn’t appropriate for young target audience to view it and the other choice was for her to change the video to be properly targeted to her audience which is teenagers and young adults. For example let say MTV accepted the music video but it could still get banded if Ofcom steps in the way Ofcom is an independent organisation created by the government so it can control what is being broadcasted on TV and Radio so basically it stipulates what can and what can’t be shown.

The debate of the music artist Eminem showed me some music videos should be censored as Eminem uses to much swearing throughout them hear is an opinion of a parent that is against Eminem “Eminem is a bad role model as he uses swearing throughout his song I know that he does this so he can express himself all do it is making children’s grammar bad”. Another Point a parent said is “Everyone had ups and downs and I think people don’t want to listen to his life story and he is trying to use this so he can make the audience feel sad and sorry for him”. Here is what the British music television channel said “Eminem has amazing songs but he doesn’t need swearing to express his feelings”. The British radio station said “ I wouldn’t play Eminem’s music on choice FM as he uses to much swearing this is mainly because the target audience of choice is young teenagers and young adults between the ages 13-27”. Finally the record label finished of the debate by saying “Rap culture can be a bad influence to the audience and kids are quickly influenced by gangs, violence and swearing.

Overall I think that music videos should and not be censored it should not be censored because without the proper lyrics it wouldn’t be the same however, that the packaging should have labelling more like that of the video game industry. On video games there is a rating system that describes what age that title is appropriate for and specific reasons why. But on the other hand it should as it is using bad language is still unethical and can be harmful. Without censoring songs, you're allowing the youth of today to believe these words or songs are cool and possibly better lived out in reality than without these songs. That continues over to the next generation that might result in worse possibilities.

Parent companies and the music industry

Parent companies and the music industry
In the music industry, a record label is a brand associated with the marketing of music and music videos. Artists are often managed and ‘owned’ by a record label to broaden their audience, market their albums, and to be promoted and heard on radio, television, and other media.
The four major labels have sub- labels as well. These are labels that work on their own but are owned by one of the four major labels. As well as this there is independent labels ‘Indies’; these are record labels that are not owned by one of the four major labels.
Sony Music Entertainment is the second-largest global recorded music company of the "big four" record companies and is controlled by Sony Corporation of America. Sony music entertainer owns more than 100 of sub labels hear are the most popular sub labels they own Columbia Records, Epic Records, RCA Records, Roc Nation, Sony Music Nashville, Sony Masterworks, Provident Music Group, Legacy Recordings, RED Distribution, IODA Labels, Sony Music UK.
The music industry is structured by 4 major companies which are Sony Music Entertainment, EMI group, Warner Music group and Universal Music Group. These companies also own lots of smaller sub- labels, for example Sony music entertainment owns more than 200 sub-labels. Also there are independent labels that are not owned by any of the four record labels for example Record companies and music publishers that are not under the control of the four main are generally considered to be independent indie, even if they are large corporations with complex structures. The term indie label is sometimes used to refer to only those independent labels that adhere to independent criteria of corporate structure and size, and some consider an indie label to be almost any label that releases non-mainstream music, regardless of its corporate structure.

The artists that Sony Music Entertainment manage is massive for example they manage one of the most famous RNB lady Singers Beyoncé other characters they manage are the following: Chris Brown, Justin Timberlake, R Kelly, Sean Kingston and many more they also used to manage the all-time famous Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Michael Jackson. If you look above at all of the artists Sony music entertainment manage is huge as the following characters are the most listen to now a days which is a massive and positive management for Sony music entertainment to manage the most well-known artists now a days.

Sony music entertainment covers all music genres for example: RNB, HIP HOP, POP, GOSPEL, SOUL, ROCK AND ROLL, SLOW, CLASSIC and many more genres.  The effect large companies have by owning smaller companies is that the smaller companies would have a budgeting limit higher of what they had before. For example if I opened a record label I would have a budgeting limit of £2000 but if my company is taken by a bigger company they would then give me no limit for budgeting as I make it to better standards.  Also having a bigger company owning you is much better as they are a multinational company they can advertise your music video in much more and professional standards.

Sub labels are controlled by a major company for example Sony music entertainment have more financial input put into the label because they are funded by a major label. Therefor they have more money to promote their artist and bigger budgets to launch new artists. Independent companies may find it harder to promote an artist because the sub labels have the financial backing of the majors.
The effects of independent companies have by managing music artist is that they may have less money to spend on launching an artist. The artists may be less known with only a few making it big in the popular music chart, such as there are no music artist who is managed by an independent label but are quite popular and well known. The artist tends to seen as less manufactured and focus more on music than image. The fans respect the independents labels because they seem to be more musically credible than artist signed to major labels.
