Storyboard

Evaluation of a music video
I was given a task which was to create a music video of my chosen song but the song that I can chose cannot have a music video already done for it by the artist. So I chose to do a music video of Bruno mars talking to the moon which did not have a video already done for it. What I have learnt about the music video genre whilst I was preparing my video is that every genre is important in its own way. what I mean by this is that each genre targets a different audience for example RNB would target young teenagers between the age of 13-27 the classic genre would target adult between the age of 40-60. Also for me to get more understanding of the music video genre I analysed some music videos for example I have analysed Rihanna ft. Drake what’s my name at the end of my analysing I came to a conclusion that it is more representing to teenagers and young adult between the age of 16-25. Why I came to a conclusion like this is because they have used high key lighting throughout the video which is conventional as it makes sense as bright key represent romanticism. If they were to use low key lighting it wouldn’t make sense because it would make the video dark and not appealing to the audience. Another example can be the colours used throughout the music video are conventional to the target audience as they have used bright colours.
I have created my idea for my music video by looking at conventions and analysing some similar music video which is the same genre the conventions I looked at most was the camera shots, colours and editing used through my video as I have noticed that these three where the most important as they all help to target the audience much more faster and an easier way. For my final decision to my music video I used all of the three conventions more than any other as it was more helpful and much easier to focus on than any other convention.
I also had to carry out some research about my artist, its previous audience and his other music videos. First of all the research I carried out about my artist is his biography what I mean about that is not his life is the record label he is signed to at the moment if he won any award ETC, secondly I carried out a research on it audience and how he targeted them in an easier way for example in his previous music videos such as Grenade and Marry you he used the camera shots, colours and editing more than any other convention.
When it came to planning my music video after the research I used a story board to plan my scenes as I just could not have done it using my imagination one time as I had to get the location and the camera shots correctly as it was difficult to. I had to re-record some scenes as the camera shot and the lighting was not ok and it looked like a mess.  I also had to plan where the character which was the artist had to be placed in what scene to get it to look right.
Overall I think my music video which I have created is at the standard as the actual artist video this is because I have followed mostly everything they have followed to create their own music video and it looks pretty much the same. As my ideas was similar to his idea if I had the opportunity to change my music video I would like to create some scenes with green screen as it would look much better and better quality as I think it would look more realistic as I had to use an image from Google for the moon and star as there was not any in the time being in the sky.

Planning the editing styles

Music Video: Talking To The Moon
Artist: Bruno Mars
Director: Ismail Saral

The editing style I have chosen is flash back this is because I think it is the best editing style that would suite my narrative will be flash back as my narrative is about two lovers who split up and the main artist has a flash back which he remembers good moments they had in between them selves.

The flash back will help to portray the message of love in different ways  as it would be easier to explain the narrative to the audience. Also it would be easier for the artist to build a relationship with the audience by using facial and body language expressions.

Also I would use slow pace editing as slow pace editing helps capture moments better and slower so the audience can view it in a better way to analyse his facial expressions This can build a relationship between the audiences because it will help them get in touch with the characters feelings and understand the emotions he is going through.

I would also use straight cut in my music video this is because as my artist is walking down the street he fade further down but the only way I can do that is by using straight cut This can build a relationship between the audiences because it will help them get in touch with the characters feelings and understand the emotion he is going through.

Towards the end of my music video, the video would fade to black this is just as he said " I Know your out there somewhere far away" As the music video comes to an end I use fade to black whilst he is walking down the parks pathway so the start of my story would be him walking through the path and it will end whilst he is walking through the path but the only difference is at the begging it is day and at the end it is dark.

Location and iconography

Music Video: Talking to the moon
Artist: Bruno Mars
Director: Ismail Saral

Using one location in a music video would quiet be dull and boring this is because no one would like to view the same background/location for at least 3 to 5 minutes. So that why I have decided to use more then 3 location as it would make my music video interesting and also the locations help the audience to see the facial expression and the use of his body language and also the location would help the audience to find to understand the narrative easier.

One of the locations would be Albany park as the artist is walking along the pathway I want this location he is in because I want to show the feelings that my character is feeling and at that moment in that time my character is feeling sad so by putting him to walk along the parks pathway alone shows that he is lonely and sad by his facial expression the location of the park might be able to build a relationship with my target audience as when you feel sad and lonely you would wonder around like you don't know what to do.

Another location I may use would be a hill because in the lyrics he uses " In hopes your on the other side talking to me to"  this show that the artist is hoping his loved one is on the other side so he may be climbing to find her. This locations can build a relationship between the audience and the artist this is because if I use this location the artist would show how he uses his body language and facial expression in a better standard which could help the audience understand what going on better.

Iconography is important in a music video because without it it can be quite boring this is because in my video I am going to use an I phone 4 so the artist can text her lover so we can see that he is trying to still communicate but if I don't use iconography in the music video their would of been no way they could try to communicate. Also using props in video ETC attract the audience more as it eye catching.

Costume

I have chosen white jeans so that the artist can show his vulnerability through the music video this is because if he wears dark colours people would see him as dull also white is a bright colour which is eye catching it would also allow the audience to get eye catch. I have chosen it as I think it would have a massive impact for the vulnerability of the character.

I have chosen this Red T-shirt so that the artist can wear it on top of the white jeans this is because red is the symbol of faster heartbeat and the colour of love. I think that this colour t-shirt is conventional as the song is a love song it would be good to wear, it would show the love that the artist have to the girl and it is also another eye catching piece of clothing.

I have chosen this white jacket because I thought that it would be a good match with the jeans and also it would show more of the vulnerability of the character and then the audience can understand much more easily what the music video is about. I think it is conventional because we would have vulnerable then love and vulnerable again which would make the audience understand what the video is going to be about before they watch or even listen to it.

I picked the black timberland shoe not because of the colour but because of the white strips that go around the bottom this is because it also represents vulnerability but I didn’t want to represent him to vulnerable. I think is conventional to the audience as they would spot the white strips and understand he is still vulnerable but also it would be a good match with the rest of the clothing.

I have picked the above clothings as i think it would be the best way to represent my characters also in the researched i carried out all colours represent that person in a different way for example the G-star T-shirt is in red but not in any red light red this is because i wanted the red to represent love but if i used a darker red it could of confused the audience as i could of represented blood this is what i am trying to explain you have to be careful of what colours you use as it can lead to misunderstanding to the audience. i chose the white jacket and white jean as it represent inisanty the T-shirt i chose that colour as i wanted to show the audience he is inistant aswell as love, and finally i chosen  the black timberland so i can show him as vulnerable. By carrying out primary and secondary research i have found out what colour would represtent what and how to use it in the best and effective way.

Target Audience

Target audiences are important in the media industry this is because if there is no audience then there is no industry because the target audiences are the people that allow a company of what they are going to do. For example if I was to open a new radio station I would have to decide what music to play in what genre, if I was to play RNB and HIP HOP then my target audience would be young teenagers between the ages of 16-25 but if I was to play classic music then my target audience would change and be something like 30-60 ever genre changes your target audience and without a genre you won’t be able to target an audience so briefly target audiences are important so you can plan what you want to do and who to target at.
The target audience I would relate to my music video is going to be young teenagers to young adults between the ages of 15 to 25 years old. This is because the song I decided to create a music video for is a song of Bruno Mars- Talking to the moon and the target audience for Bruno mars is roughly the same as the target audience I have chosen.  Through the recording of my music video I am going to have mostly close ups of the artist this is because it will be much easier for my target audience to build a relationship with the star.  The use of Mise en Scene through the music video would be effective I would do this by using the lighting effectively as the lighting has a massive impact on it target audience I would make sure I use low key lighting instead of high key lighting this is because I need the target audience to understand and feel what the artist is going through by simple elements such as camera shot and the lighting this is why elements are important in a music video as it allow the artist to easily build a better relationship with the audience.

Artist Identity

Artist Identity
Peter Gene Hernandez born October 8, 1985, better known by his stage name Bruno Mars, is a Filipino-American singer-songwriter and record producer. Bruno mars first signed to Motown record is 2004 after an unsuccessful stint with Motown Records, Bruno Mars signed with Atlantic and Elektra Records in 2009.
He became recognized as a solo artist after lending his vocals and co-writing the hooks for the songs "Nothing' on you" by Bob, and "Billionaire" by Travis McCoy. He also co-wrote the hits "Right Round" by Flo Rida featuring Kesha, and "Waving' Flag" by Canaan. In October 2010, he released his debut album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans. Anchored by the worldwide number one singles "Just the Way You Are" and "Grenade", the album peaked at number three on the Billboard  He was nominated for seven Grammys at the 53rd Grammy Awards, winning Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "Just the Way You Are".
The artist has been working with the following record labels Atlantic and Elektra since 2009 which he has been working with them for the past 2 ½ year as we are going in to 2012. Bruno mars was signed to Atlantic as his first record label Motown records was unsuccessful then after joining Atlantic a few months later Atlantic discovered the record label Elektra and persuaded Mars to join them as they did.
The labels benefit the artist by helping him with his song writing and music video productions also the labels have a massive role of helping mars as his first record label was stint and they wanted to pick him up as he was already worldwide known.  Bruno mars only had 1 released album which was Doo- Wops & Hooligans.

Bruno Mars- Grenade

Camera shots: A lot of close ups are used during the music video of Bruno mars Grenade music video as Mars is the main character in the video he has the most close up this is because he is trying to build a relationship with the audience, he is doing this by using the camera to make the audience see what kind of pain he is in and how he is struggling.

Color: Throughout the music video Mars uses dark color’s to show the audience how sad he is as he just broke up with his girlfriend the colors used are all dark and dull the colors used where black, not white and not yellow in between them also he used brown. All these color allow us the audience to see the sadness he is facing but he also tried to fade it in so he don’t go away from his target audience so he recorded in a sunny weather which then faded in with the dark and still targeted his audience which is between the ages of 16 to 24 years olds.

Editing: Straight cut is used mostly throughout the music video this is used so the audience can stay concentrated and not to confuse them as they are watching the music video also so that the music video can make sense to the audience whilst they are watching it.

Low key lighting has been used mostly through the music video this is so that it can appeal to its target audience not by the age but about what the narrative is about. It used low key lighting to show us the audience what the music video is about which is about Bruno Mars was breaking up with his girlfriend. So
they used the colors to represent sadness.

Body Language: The body language used through this music video is serious I know this because of the lyrics use in the video were in the lyrics Bruno sing to I would take a bullet to my brain but you won’t do the same as we hear these lyric we know that it is a love song and the body language has to be serious as the lyrics are powerful.

Location: The location of the music video of Bruno Mars – Grenade is set through the city of Los Angles. Props:  There were many props in the scene/locations there were buildings, cars, Trucks, Taxis and pedestrians and many more this made the video more realistic to the eyes of the audience.
Costume: Bruno mars was wearing a full black suit with a white shirts and a black tie he wore these clothing so he can seem serious as someone would look more serious in a suit rather than jeans and a T-Shirt.

The media points I have analyses above are conventional to the music video genre of Bruno Mars- Grenade because the video makes sense and the conventions are appropriate and follow the video for example they have use low key lighting through the video which is conventional as low key lighting would represent sadness. If they were to use bright lighting the video would seem happy and joyful and Bruno Mars would be able to express himself to the audience so the music video is appropriate to the age group of 16 to 24 as is uses the correct conventions through the video.

Album Cover

The shot is trying to show the path of Bruno Mars and the journey he has taken so for I know this by the image above as the jet smoke draws a pathway. The picture is an animation of Bruno mars journey he has taken so far of his career, we cannot discover the costume hair or makeup of the music video cover this is because the image is an animation and there in just a blob that looks like a character.  The character is positioned on the bottom right side of the cover this is because he is walking along a small side of the path as there is a big path empty so they are trying to tell use that it still is the begging of his career. The camera shot is a low angle shot which make the character seem strong and powerful.

Album Sales/Rewards

The album's title refers to doo-wop music and was chosen to reflect simplicity, as well as appeal to both males and females. Generic convention of Music Videos

Generic Convention of Music Videos
Camera shots: A lot of close ups are used in the music video of Rihanna Ft Drake What’s My Name there are more close up of Rihanna then there is of drake this is because she is trying to build a relationship with the audience.
Colour:  The whole music video of Rihanna Ft Drake what my name uses all bright colours throughout the video this is used so it can appeal to the audience white, yellow, red, green, black and gold are the most appearing colour throughout the video clip. As they are uplifting colours by just looking at these colours in the first seconds of the videos you can spot out the target audience which are teenager between the ages of 16-25. An example of the colours used was in Rihanna’s costume/ clothing she is wearing.
Editing: straight cut is used mostly throughout the video clip which is used so it can help the to make the audience concentrate and not to confuse them as they are watching. So it is used so the video can make sense to the audience which are watching it.
Lighting:  the lighting used was bright lighting which is effective for this kind of music video as it appeals to its target audience. This is because in a music video with a target audience they used low key lighting would be strange as it isn’t a horror but throughout the music video they have used natural colours this is good because it allows the lighting to flow with the video and appeal to its target audience..
Body language: the body language Rihanna uses throughout this music video is fun and dancing we know this because the song is not a strong one what I mean by this is that the lyrics are not that powerful so she doesn’t need to act more serious Throughout the video.
Location: the location of the music video is set???
Props:  there where many props in the scene for example buildings, cars, taxis, pedestrians and many more this made the video more realistic to the audiences eyes as she wanted she could of recorded in a studio behind natural lighting but she decided to record on street and in shop.
Costumes: Rihanna was wearing this short with a t-shirt when the audience first saw her then after the scene changed she started to wear dresses. When it comes to drake he was wearing jeans and a sporty jacket on top.

Cost Of music video

Director: Mark Romaneke: 3 million
Cast: 2.5 million
Camera crew: 20 thousand
Sound crew:  18 thousand
Lighting: 12 thousand
Wardrobe/Make up/ Hair: 250 thousand
Non dancing roles: 500 pounds
Location cost: 100 thousand
Equipment hire: 20 thousand
Electrical: 2500 pounds
Editor: 20 thousand
Sound editor: 16 thousand
Total= £447005.4
Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson music video of scream cost a total of 4.5 million pounds and 7million us dollars. Also Rihanna man down music video cost quite a lot in total it cost about 1 million British pounds.
Michael Jackson/Rihanna both got there funding’s from the music funding organisation which is there to help you create a music video if you are low on budget so that where they would kick In and sign a contract with you after the video has been released and before the contract signed deadline expires you have to pay the company there money back without interest or with it depend what you have agreed on but the music funding I have agreed on will take 10% of all my earing so if I earn a million they would take 10% which would leave me with 90000. This is how the music funding companies work and my music funding organisation will be the musician union
Michael Jacksons scream music video cost 4.5 million pound and 7million dollars as they had to create the whole scene from scratch when I mean from scratch that there was not a scene like that before invented so they had to pay at least 2.5million for the scene but the scene they invented was not any other scene this scene was a scene of a large spacecraft. I will receive my funding from the music funding organisation as I am short on budget, so I will sign a contract with them to lend me the amount I need and pay them after the release of the music video so in that way I and them can make money at the same time.
I would get Mark Romanek to direct the recording as he is Americans one of all time’s best directors and also as he won 3 Grammy awards for best short form music video. I will also get Mark to direct this music video as I think he is popular and I would be able to attract the audience with his fantastic ideas. I would also get Mark Romanek working cast to do the editing, sound ETC as I think they would do it to the best of their ability.
